A baby giraffe at African Lion Safari in southern Ontario is the first in Canada to born through artificial insemination, park officials say.
Named Safari, the female Rothschild calf was born Dec. 31 to mother Calgary and father Jimmy. It weighed 60 kg and was 175 cm tall.
"This birth is an incredible accomplishment for our dedicated team, who have put tremendous effort towards establishing a program to conserve the valuable genetics of our giraffe population," Jason Pootoolal, giraffe supervisor at African Lion Safari, said in a release.
"Using artificial reproductive techniques we are able to preserve genetic material for future generations as well as to hopefully improve the exchange of genetics in the global giraffe population."
The park made the announcement this week on its Facebook page.
African Lion Safari is located near Cambridge, about 100 km west of Toronto.
