German astronaut Alexander Gerst called it his saddest photo yet.

In a tweet from the International Space Station Wednesday, Gerst shared a photo taken as they passed over Gaza and Israel:

He also shared the photo on Facebook.

It has been shared online more than 21,000 times.

One comment in German under the Facebook post read: "and seen from outer space, where you can see no political boundaries, one wonders only why."

Another English comment said: "So sad. You have given us proof of what we're doing to ourselves."
