Space mission delayed again

On July 13th, Space shuttle Endeavour's mission to space was delayed for the 5th time. This time it was due to an evening thunderstorm.

NASA has has planned another attempt at the launch of space shuttle Endeavour on July 10th.

Space Tourist

Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté is scheduled to be the first Canadian national to fly as a space tourist. He is scheduled to blast off in the Russian spacecraft, Soyuz TMA-14, in September 2009 and will dock at the International Space Station. Laliberté says he will use his trip to raise awareness about water issues in developing countries. The trip will cost Laliberté US$35 million.

Two Canadians in space

On June 13, 2009, when Endeavour is scheduled to blast off, Julie Payette will embark on her second mission into space, joining fellow Canadian Robert Thirsk at the International Space Station. This will be the first time two Canadians are in space at the same time.

Six month space mission

On May 27, 2009, astronaut Robert Thirsk became the first Canadian to fly on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, which took him to the International Space Station. He was scheduled to live on the ISS for six months -- a Canadian first.

May 13, 2009, the Canadian Space Agency named Jeremy R. Hansen and David Saint-Jacques as the two newest Canadian astronauts.

Third space walk

On August 27, 2007, while on an Endeavour mission, Dave Williams became the third Canadian do to a spacewalk.

2006

Second space walk

On September 9, 2006, while on an Atlantis mission, Steven MacLean became the second Canadian to walk in space.

2003

Telescope launched

On June 30, 2003, the Microvariability and Oscillations of Stars telescope is launched. It was Canada’s first space telescope launched into space. It was also the world’s smallest.

2001

Canadarm 2

On April 19, 2001, while on a Discovery mission, Chris Hadfield became the first Canadian to do a spacewalk. The Canadarm 2, a larger and more enhanced version of the original arm, was also installed.

2000

Third space visit

On November 30, 2000, Marc Garneau became the only Canadian to visit space three times when he was part of a crew that installed the ISS’s solar arrays. Garneau has logged more than 677 hours in space.
