More than 5,000 children from across Canada have unleashed names for 10 pups being raised as canine Mounties.
Results of the annual naming contest — held at the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre in Alberta — were released Thursday, and one chosen entry came from Ontario. The name Tank was submitted by Sofia Lopez, 11, of Ottawa.
In fact, all names for the German shepherds had to start with 'T'.
Other winning names for the pups included: Taz, Tango, Topaz, Taser — also the name for a non-lethal electrical shock gun police to subdue dangerous or threatening suspects — Thunder, True, Tony, Tracker and Tiger.
Four school or classroom entries were also picked for special honours, one of which came from Newmarket's St. Paul School.
Some schools submitted names for pups, while others set up displays.
The 10 individual winners will receive a photo of their "officially" named puppy, an official RCMP ball cap, a plush dog named "Justice" and a certificate. The winning classrooms will be given a photo of Mountie pups born at the centre on March 7, plus a plush dog and certificate.
There are 133 RCMP dog teams based across Canada. In addition to tracking suspects, the four-legged cops have been credited with saving hundreds of people’s lives.
Since Mounties added dog teams in 1935, Cpl. Glenn Brown said they have saved hundreds of people, including missing children and seniors — even suspects.
“We’ve actually ended up saving people who ran into the woods after a crime, who weren’t properly dressed and were freezing,” Brown, a trainer, said Thursday.
