Event tears a strip off cancer
Adult entertainment stars pound volleyball for charityBy KEN BROWN -- Sun Media
Normally you would find stripper Margherita Gervasi entertaining crowds at Club Pro in Concord, but yesterday she was displaying her beach volleyball skills. Gervasi, 31, was playing along side fellow exotic dancers at an inaugural charity event held in Vaughan at the Oasis Beach Volleyball Club. "I think it's an awesome idea to get beach volleyball involved," said Gervasi, one of about 40 male and female dancers who braved the rainy weather to raise $2,000 to fight cancer. "We've been practising the last couple of weeks to get this done, and we're having a great time." The adult entertainers were playing to raise funds for Sunnybrook hospital's Underwear Affairs, related to cancers below the waist. 'REALLY INVOLVED' Duane Rivait, program manager for The Sports Village, where the Oasis is located, said the nightclubs were "really involved" with the event. BIGGER NEXT YEAR "If you try to attach it to some type of charity, you get a lot of people turning out because everyone wants to help out," said Rivait, adding that he hopes to expand the tournament next year. Seven teams participated and members of a regular adult night league also came out to play, said event boss Pamela Fitzgerald. The Whiskey-A-Go Go club donated $500, she said, and Club Pro matched it. Another $300 was donated by people attending the event and most of the remainder came from sponsor, Aren't We Naughty. "We try to attach some sort of charity to all of our tournaments," Fitzgerald said. "Money is here to be made, so why not give a good chunk of it to somebody who needs it?" The team fielded by Treasures nightclub, of Mississauga, won the event.
