Couple gets into 'pubic' altercation
By DEAN PRITCHARD, QMI Agency

WINNIPEG -- A Winnipeg man who flew into a rage after he awoke from a drunken slumber to find his girlfriend had shaven off his pubic hair was sentenced Tuesday to six months house arrest.

The 32-year-old man pleaded guilty to not complying with a probation order.

Court heard the man was under a court order he have no contact with his girlfriend while intoxicated.

Police arrested the man last August after receiving a call from his 19-year-old girlfriend saying he was “out of control” and had been drinking for two days.

“He told police that he had fallen asleep and awoke to find (his girlfriend) had shaved his pubic hair and they got into an argument,” said Crown attorney Jennifer Mann.

“Police noted (the man) was rather obnoxious when they were dealing with him.”

Mann said the accused should be sentenced to real jail, noting he has one conviction for assaulting the woman and a lengthy record for breaching court orders.

The man told court he is working full-time and has quit drinking.

Defence lawyer Darren Sawchuk said the couple and their now 10-month-old baby have been living together since the man’s release on bail three days after the incident. Sawchuk said the man is the sole financial support for the family.

“We aren’t doing (the woman) any favours starving her on the one hand and protecting her on the other,” he said.

Judge Wanda Garreck said the Crown was justified in seeking a jail sentence but agreed to give him “a big break,” and allow him to serve a six-month conditional sentence in the community.
