Man arrested after van crashes through hospital doors

Police in Charlottetown are saying a driver who crashed a van through the main entrance of a hospital did it deliberately.

Cops responded to a call from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital about a collision around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

They discovered that a silver minivan had gone past concrete stanchions in front of the entrance, through the main doors, then across a vestibule and through another set of doors.

"In order for him to have gotten where he went, he would have had to maneuvre through the barricades in front of the hospital, then line the vehicle up at the doors," Deputy Chief Gary McGuigan said.

No one was injured in the crash.

Joseph Gallant, 63, of Johnstons River, was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, damage to property and endangering life.

He remains in custody awaiting a court appearance Friday.

McGuigan said police do not have a motive for the destructive and potentially dangerous act.

"We will continue to investigate," he said, "and try to get a clear picture of why this happened."
