While the ladies at Mardi Gras hit Bourbon Street, showing their breasts in exchange for beads, the women of Buffalo, N.Y., will be collecting beads to win a new pair of breasts.
In a new twist on the Mardi Gras tradition, a group of bars in downtown Buffalo were giving away a free breast augmentation surgery to whoever collects the most beads on Fat Tuesday.
"I wanted an attention grabber," Sean Coughlin, manager of Bayou nightclub, told the Buffalo News, adding: "As bad as the promotion sounds, I don't want it executed in a tacky way."
But not everyone thinks Boobs for Beads is a good idea, and it's created debate in the Queen City.
Ruth Meyerowitz, a retired University of Buffalo professor of women's studies, called the contest "dehumanizing for both men and women" in the paper.
One commenter on Facebook wrote: "I dont want to sound like a Debbie downer... but you could spend that money on a needed charity."
The organizers don't explain how patrons win the beads, only that they will be handed out at all 13 participating bars.
No boobs? No problem. Men can participate, too, and the winner can choose a tummy-tuck, nose job or other cosmetic procedure instead.
