Homes evacuated after man takes home box of explosives
By QMI Agency

Blasting caps filer

WINNIPEG — Twenty homes in Pukatawagan, Man., were evacuated Tuesday night as RCMP transported explosives out of the community.

A man had been cleaning up a local warehouse when he found the caps, which are used as detonators in commercial mining and demolition, but are themselves explosive devices.

“He gathered them up, put them in a box, and took them home,” RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said.

Tuesday night, an RCMP officer in the community was flagged down and brought to the man’s home.

“The gentleman in question was wondering what to do with them,” Karpish asid.

Officers from the RCMP explosive disposal unit flew out Wednesday morning to deal with the caps, likely by detonating them, Karpish said.

The man won’t face charges.

Pukatawagan is located in the northern part of the province.
