Motorcyclist busted for texting while riding

EDMONTON - Police said not only was an Edmonton motorcyclist arrested for texting while riding on Sunday, but he ran into another vehicle trying to get away.

Just before 9 p.m. Sunday, city cops saw a man texting while driving a motorcycle riding down a city street.

“Our officers have seen some pretty ridiculous things from motorists, including people trying to read while driving, a person using their knees to steer a vehicle while eating a bowl of cereal and now this,” said city police traffic Staff Sgt. Barry Maron.

When officers signaled for the rider to pull over, he opened the throttle and sped off, striking an oncoming vehicle.

The man then tried to run away but was quickly apprehended.

It’s been almost a year since Alberta introduced distracted driving legislation, making it illegal to operate a cellphone while driving.

Wayne Aucoin, 43, of Edmonton, has been charged with criminal flight, criminal hit and run, disqualified driving and numerous other provincial traffic offences.
