Seniors duke it out at retirement village meeting

SIMCOE, Ont. -- Police were called to a retirement village in Port Rowan, Ont., after two seniors got into a scuffle at a public meeting to discuss the possible expansion of the community clubhouse.

Two men grappled, fell to the floor and rolled around in front of about 140 people before the battle was broken up, a witness said.

“Can you imagine this, a bunch of senior citizens?” said resident Beryl Barton, who was in the front row and watched as the pair rolled right up to her feet.

“It’s the talk of the village right now.”

The complex consists of about 326 freehold housing units that share a clubhouse with a billiards table, whirlpool and indoor pool.

The community is divided over whether to go for the expansion, which would result in a $500,000 mortgage, Barton said.

The fracas started Thursday afternoon, she said, when a man who was objecting to the way the meeting was being run refused to hand over the microphone.

Somebody tried to take the microphone from him, which led to the fight, Barton said.

Norfolk OPP sent two officers to the scene, which had calmed down by the time they arrived, Const. Ed Sanchuk said.

Nobody was hurt in the altercation, he added.

“I’ve never heard of anything like this before,” said another resident who has lived in the complex for 17 years.

Charged with assault is Dan Steeves, 61, of Norfolk County.
