WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg mom says her daughter is afraid to go outside and is suffering from panic attacks after seeing Mr. JetzTV's picture in the paper Monday.
Darrell Erwin Ackman, 43, is out on bail on a list of charges that includes living off the avails of prostitution, sexual assault and making child pornography.
The woman, who can't be named to avoid identifying her daughter, said her 17-year-old is one of the victims associated with those charges.
She said the girl is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, can't sleep and is on medication following her recent release from the Manitoba Youth Centre.
"My child's scared," she said.
News of Ackman's candidacy in the Sept. 4 Fort Whyte byelection just made it worse, she said. Elections Manitoba officially confirmed him as a candidate Monday.
"I'm in tears here. I can't get over this. I think our government should look at things differently ... to let someone like that run?"
Ackman initially made headlines last winter for filming women — some caught off-guard — and calling himself Mr. JetzTV. At the time, he told QMI Agency he was trying to "be like Justin Bieber" by promoting his video clips in hopes of attracting fame and wealth,
Earlier this month, Winnipeg police announced he was facing charges for allegedly recruiting young girls to work in prostitution and pornography. Police are probing the cases of four 14-year-old alleged victims and are looking into allegations from another eight girls, investigators said Aug. 1.
On Monday, police spokesperson Sgt. Monica Strothers said they won't disclose any further information about the charges while it could jeopardize the ongoing investigation.
Ackman's bail conditions ban him from contacting anyone under 18, among other things.
"And he's going around campaigning? No. No. No," the mom said.
The mother said her daughter came forward with the names of other alleged victims, and convinced them to testify.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
"I don't see what's wrong with running for an election," Ackman said Sunday.
Ackman faces prostitution charges in Florida. Police there said they don't release details on potential extradition to avoid tipping off criminals.
PC Leader Brian Pallister, Liberal Bob Axworthy, the NDP's Brady Schmidt and the Green Party's Donnie H.J. Benham were also confirmed as candidates in Fort Whyte.
