SARNIA, ONT. - A woman who sold brass flower urns stolen from a cemetery to support a drug habit has been sentenced to 45 days in jail.

Leanne Vansickle, 21, pleaded guilty Thursday in Sarnia, Ont., court to theft, use of a stolen credit card, possession of the stolen urns, failing to attend court and a court-order violation over the past eight months.

Vansickle was “hooked” on prescription drugs and her crimes were feeding the habit, said defence lawyer Robert McFadden.

On Jan. 24, Vansickle and two other people sold 16 brass flower urns to a scrap dealer. They’d been reported stolen earlier in the day by a cemetery caretaker.

One of the trio was sentenced to 85 days in jail and the other is still before the courts.

Vansickle’s jail time includes 17 days of pre-sentence custody and will be followed by a year’s probation when she must take substance-abuse counselling.
