ORILLIA, Ont. — Joseph VanDeven’s quiet afternoon of reading came to a screeching halt when a car rammed into his bedroom in Orillia, Ont., Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of a blue Mazda 3 crashed into the home after colliding with a silver Mercedes-Benz at about 3 p.m.

“I was sitting on my bed, reading a book and all I heard was this huge smash and this thing was coming through the wall,” VanDeven said. “It smashed my bed and threw me on the floor.”

He was not injured.

At first, VanDeven thought the building — which houses apartment units — was collapsing.

“It was loud, like a grenade going off,” he said.

VanDeven, who has lived in the building for more than four years, ran from his room screaming.

He called his landlord and police.

“My tenant called me, crying,” said building owner Kim Salmon. “He was so frightened. He said, ‘Oh, my gosh. I thought I was going to get killed.’”

VanDeven was “really shook up” after the incident, he said.

“It scared the crap out of me,” VanDeven said.

VanDeven said he’s always worried about vehicles hitting the building.

“They go through here like crazy,” he said. “I had a car hit my window last winter. That shook my bed. It didn’t go through or anything.”

No one was injured in the collision and charges are pending, said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Shannon Petryshyn.

A city building inspector is investigating to determine the stability of the building.
