SAULT STE. MARIE -- A man wearing a pair of skates and booze on his breath was nabbed going through a red light while on his way to an outdoor rink.

Police saw a car fail to stop at Wellington Street West and John Street at about 7 p.m. Saturday.

The driver told police he was going to Esposito Park, named after hockey legends Phil and Tony Esposito.

There was a smell of alcohol on the driver's breath and the man was under a court order to abstain from alcohol.

The man was given two breathalyzer tests, but was not intoxicated, police said.

Driving with skates “is probably not very safe” because the motorist has limited contact with the brake and gas pedals, Staff Sgt. Ken Hruska said.

Derek Lepage, 45, was charged with breach of an undertaking and will appear in court March 4
