A Windsor man is facing drug charges for allegedly trying to swim across the St. Clair River to smuggle nearly eight pounds of marijuana into the U.S.
A citizen called the St. Clair County Sheriff’s office in Michigan Monday about 1 a.m., after spotting someone swimming across the river south of Sarnia.
Surveillance camera operators honed in on the swimmer, who had a dry container often used by scuba divers in tow, and relayed his whereabouts to border patrol agents on the ground in Marine City, Mich.
Authorities arrested a man in full scuba when he emerged from the water. They found a watertight container holding more than three kg of marijuana tied to a seawall ladder.
Jesse James Thomas Zunti, 24, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, delivering/manufacturing marijuana and a four-year felony.
On Tuesday, Zunti, who is being kept in a St. Clair County jail, made his first appearance in court, where bond was set at $100,000.
His next court date is Sept. 4.
