Stubbs the cat, honorary mayor of the Alaskan town of Talkeetna, is recovering in a veterinary hospital after he was savagely attacked by a dog over the weekend.
A loose dog attacked the orange cat on Saturday, leaving the town's mayor with a large gash, a fractured sternum and a punctured lung, the Anchorage Daily News reports.
Lauri Stec, manager of Nagley's General Store where Stubbs spends much of his time on the counter, said that by late Tuesday afternoon, Stubbs was on a lot of medication but doing well after his chest tube was removed, the Daily News reported. Stec said people across the U.S. have offered to donate money to help offset the cost of her vet bills.
Stubbs, a part-manx cat with a short tail, made headlines last year when an Anchorage television station reported that he was elected mayor of the town of 900 people 16 years ago.
Talkeetna is part of the Anchorage metropolitan area.
