A mother in China lied to her daughter from a young age, telling her she wasn't her real mother to get her to stop acting spoiled and arrogant.
About 13 years ago, the mother told her daughter, Cheng Cheng, her wealthy biological mother died years before and she was caring for Cheng Cheng until she finished university, the Shenyang Evening News reported.
After a period of disbelief, the girl started to study harder and became less arrogant, the paper reported. The mother said Cheng Cheng became "sensible and obedient."
Cheng Cheng chose to attend a boarding school for her secondary schooling to "live independently," and went on to earn university scholarships and land a job at a prestigious software company in Shanghai, the paper reported.
When Cheng Cheng was told the truth, she was reportedly baffled but her mother stands by the decision.
"If I had (told her the truth), she would have just been satisfied in her existing environment and wouldn't have the motivation and prospects that she has now."
