In an effort to help their friend quit drinking and driving, two U.S. YouTubers staged a prank in which they convinced him he'd spent 10 years in a coma, complete with a mock hospital room.
The video, entitled "Epic Don't Drink and Drive Prank", generated 770,000 hits as of Monday afternoon.
The friend, who remains unnamed in the video, has five DUIs, according to YouTubers Tom Mabe and Jim Clark, who staged the elaborate prank.
To pull it off, the pair converted a small office into a hospital room. When their buddy passed out drunk in his vehicle, they moved him into the bogus sick bay.
When the man awoke, a "Dr. James" told him he'd been drinking, there had been a crash and the year was 2023. On his way out of the room he turned on a television that played a futuristic newscast, which included a clip about President Hilary Clinton threatening to invade Canada.
When the second doctor — really Tom Mabe — came into the room, he carried the prank along for a couple more minutes before revealing the truth and smacking his friend in the head.
"It's not funny, you could f---ing have lost your daughter," he yelled at his relieved, but hungover, buddy on the hospital bed.
"Ten years wasted away here. Dude, you've got to f---ing stop."
