SAO PAULO - A 40-year-old farmer with a knife stuck in his head was found asking for help on the streets of Agudos, 300 km from Sao Paulo in southeastern Brazil, local police said Tuesday.

"The man was found Monday with a knife going through his head. He was walking normally down the street asking for help," said Commissioner Biazon Jader.

"Neighbours took him to the emergency room and during the trip he said he did not remember anything," added the Commissioner, as quoted on G1 news website.

The man was operated upon arrival at the hospital to remove the knife.

According to doctors, the operation was successful. The man is conscious and remains under observation in hospital.

Police said the man said he made a "suicide attempt" after an argument with his girlfriend but police are following other leads.

"In the emergency room, he told police he had attempted suicide, but it may have been attempted murder," added Commissioner Biazon. "According to his mother, some electronic devices have disappeared from his home."
