The first pub in Britain to open off a highway is raising concerns that the location will promote drinking and driving.

Hope and Champion, operated by the U.K. chain JD Wetherspoon, opened on Tuesday at a service stop off the M40 highway 40 km northwest of London, the Guardian reported.

"The opening of a pub on a motorway is a serious concern, presenting a potentially deadly temptation to drivers," a spokesman for road safety charity Brake told the paper.

Representatives from JD Wetherspoon said the location will offer a variety of non-alcoholic drinks at a reduced price as well as a selection of booze.

"But we are not naive. We know that giving drivers the chance to have a pint off the motorway is an unusual offer. But equally we do not live in a nanny state. We expect drivers to act responsibly."

Despite any opposition, Wetherspoon has plans to open more service stop locations in the future.
