A man who skewered a mother raccoon and bashed a baby raccoon to death with a hammer last June pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges Tuesday.

The mother raccoon was caught in a humane trap, but there was nothing humane about what happened next: Ottawa Humane Society investigators found the mother raccoon spitted on a barbecue rotisserie rod.

The battered baby raccoon was found nearby.

Investigators hope Gregory Armstrong, 49, will be handed the five-year maximum sentence for animal abuse.

The Crown, however, elected to ask for a nine- to 12-month jail sentence, while the defence asked for a 60-day sentence.

Defence lawyer Robert Meagher said Armstrong had been on the losing end of a battle against raccoons infesting the south-end home where he sleeps on a buddy’s couch.

“(Armstrong) obviously took measures which are totally egregious and inappropriate,” Meagher said.

But a 60-day jail sentence “would bring home the message: This type of behaviour will result in severe consequences.”

Judge Jack Nadelle is expected to sentence Armstrong later Tuesday.
