A male monkey who has fathered 50 babies in five years has been moved from its German zoo to give the females a bit of a break.

Purus, a 10-year-old squirrel monkey, is the only sexually-active male in the enclosure at Halle Zoo near Leipzig, which also includes 53 females, The Local reported.

Since arriving in 2009, Purus has fathered 50 babies with 25 female monkeys.

Purus is also being removed to prevent the monkey from mating with its own offspring.

The monkey will be moved to a zoo in the Czech Republic just in time for another breeding season.
