Two Canadians were detained after they streaked through the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru this week.

Marc Antoine Daudelin and Patrice Mathieu, both 20, were caught running naked in the area called Temple of the Three Windows on Wednesday morning, La Prensa reported. They were photographing themselves with a cellphone.

They were taken into custody by police and released.

The two men are believed to be from Quebec. A Facebook listing for a Marc-Antoine Daudelin says he is from Gatineau and is friends with a Patrice Mathieu.

The two were detained a day after Peru's Ministry of Culture issued a statement denouncing a recent spat of people running around the ancient city in the buff.

Ministry officials said in a statement it "rejects any disrespectful act committed by visitors in the history site of Machu Picchu or any public space linked to our cultural heritage," encouraging visitors and residents to help stop the behaviour.
