Smell-o-vision

In 1965, the BBC had viewers rubbing their noses on the televisions after it announced the invention of “Smell-o-vision.” In an interview, a “scientist” claimed he could transmit scents through the TV. In an experiment, he put coffee and onions in his machine and callers claimed they could smell them through their TVs.

It sounds goofy now, but Google revived the prank in 2013, with Google Nose. The hoax video claimed users could search for smells on the Internet via laptop, tablet and smartphone.

Left-handed burgers

In 1998, Burger King published a full page ad in USA Today introducing their newest menu item - the left-handed burger.

Promoted with the catchphrase “Have it your way,” the new whopper had all the same ingredients but with condiments skewed to the left.

Despite the obvious joke, Burger King reported that customers actually ordered left and right handed burgers.

Drinking and driving on the information superhighway

Back when the Internet was a new thing, you know, in 1994, PC Computing magazine published an article warning of a law against drinking and surfing the net.

It detailed a potential bill going through congress that would prevent people from drinking and driving on the information superhighway.

While it isn’t illegal, drunk Facebook posting and emailing have caused many a regret.

When penguins fly

In 2008, the BBC had a lot of fun producing a video of a unique group of penguins who could fly. Voiced by filmmaker Terry Jones, the video shows the penguins taking off from Antarctica and migrating to the rainforests of South America for the winter. Lucky penguins.
