OTTAWA — When Nick Bachusky ordered nine gyros on Tuesday from Greco on Bank, he was unaware that he had set in motion a series of small misunderstandings that would become a potential disaster.

The mortgage broker was having a few friends over to watch Game of Thrones and to try his latest edible obsession, Greco’s lamb and beef gyros.

So he phoned in an advance order at around 2 p.m. That’s when a language barrier snowballed into a comedy of errors worthy of an Abbott and Costello routine.

Every time Bachusky asked for nine gyros, the man on the other end of the phone, Omid Rahmani, heard 90.

“I asked him again if he wanted 90 gyros and he said, ‘Yes,’” the soft-spoken Kurd explained. “Perhaps my English is not so good, so I asked him again if he wanted 90 gyros and he said, ‘Yes.’”

Rahmani called in his wife Truska and teenaged daughter to help him fill the order.
