It’s Oxford Dictionary’s 2013 word of the year, but that doesn’t mean all versions of it should be celebrated.

The selfie has become a phenomenon among pretty much everyone with a smartphone. Everything from #nomakeupselfies, #cellotapeselfies, to yes, even #uHaulselfies, show up on social media sites like Instagram and Twitter.

While most are harmless, some are just plain, well, stupid.

Here’s a list of some downright #stupidselfies.

  • The #cadaverselfie: Student takes selfie with dead body on school field trip

  • (WHNT video screenshot)

Selfies on school field trips are expected.

But when those trips involve touring a university biology department where human cadavers are stored, you’d think the cellphones would be put away.

According to WHNT, a senior high school student in North Alabama thought it was OK to use a dead body as her backdrop while visiting the University of Alabama in February.

The university said sheets covering the cadavers “were not meant to be removed from donated bodies” and that students were not to have cell phones during the tour. The student reportedly faced disciplinary actions from her high school.

  • The #skimaskselfie: Kentucky man selfies before robbery

  • Photo from Knox County Kentucky Sheriff's Office

Does this ski mask make me look fat? I don’t know, let me take a selfie.

We don’t know what was going through the mind of Kevin Lawson, a Kentucky man who donned a white ski mask and took a selfie of himself before allegedly robbing a market earlier this month.

But police are sure glad he took the photo.

Surveillance camera footage showed a burglar wearing a blue hoodie with white gloves and a hooded mask leaving a market with a duffel bag of stolen items. Officers found white gloves in the man’s neighbour’s yard, leading them to Lawson who handed over his cellphone at the request of deputies.

On the phone was the selfie. Busted.

Lawson is charged with burglary and mischief.

  • The #funeralselfie: Rob Ford, Justin Trudeau stop for selfies at funeral

  • Justin Trudeau gets his picture taken with an unknown person at the State Funeral for Jim Flaherty that took place at St. James Cathedral on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 in Toronto. (Veronica Henri/QMI Agency)

It’s not like they planned it, but Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau stopped to pose for selfies outside St. James Cathedral after the funeral of former finance minister Jim Flaherty in April.

Trudeau is seen smiling alongside a woman while Ford’s photo shows the mayor looking awkward as the man he’s with gives the camera a thumbs up.

The photos put the politicians under fire. If only this was Ford’s main controversy right about now.

  • The #worldleaderselfie: Obama takes selfie at Nelson Mandela memorial

  • Screengrab from YouTube

Perhaps Trudeau and Ford didn’t see what happened after U.S. President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt posed for a selfie at Nelson Mandela’s memorial in December. The trio ignited a firestorm of tweets lambasting the world leaders for the inappropriately timed selfie.

  • The #fullofhimselfie: James Franco’s half-naked selfie

  • James Franco posted this photo of himself on Instagram.com on Thursday, but deleted it moments later. (Editor’s Note: Photo has been digitally altered to remove graphic content)

A shiny selfie of James Franco made headlines earlier this month when the Academy Award-winner posted a saucy picture of himself on Instagram.

Franco is seen shirtless and suggestively pulling down his underpants on the verge of completely exposing James Junior. It’s not the most flattering picture of Franco, who frequently makes sexiest men alive lists, so it’s no wonder why he deleted the picture just hours later after being mocked by critics.

  • The #castawayselfie: Plane crash survivor snaps selfie in ocean

The plane you’re on just lost power.

You have to make an emergency landing in the ocean off a Hawaiian island.

The plane crashes and the people on board are frantic to put on life preservers after surviving the whole ordeal.

Naturally, capturing the whole thing on a camera is a high priority. That’s what Ferdinand Puentes thought at least. According to Hawaii News Now, the man took a selfie in the ocean with a sinking plane in the background and survivors floating in the water behind him shortly after the aircraft went down in December. Luckily they were all rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

  • The #arrestmenowselfie: Bank robbery suspect posted selfie with gun on Facebook

  • Jules Bahler, 21, was arrested for three bank robberies in Michigan after posting a photo of himself and a gun on Facebook.(Photo: Facebook/QMI Agency)

Jules Bahler should have listened to his friend when he said not to post selfies with a new gun.

“I wouldn't show that s--- off like that cops be watching this s--- brotha," the friend wrote on Bahler's Facebook page, according to TheSmokingGun.com, after Bahler posted a status update saying he had bought his first house and sub-machine gun on March 5.

That was the same day a robber entered a Bay City bank with a black sub-machine gun and made off with $7,000. The next day someone tipped off cops in Oakland about the photo and Bahler was arrested. After his arrest, Bahler and two others admitted to the robbery, police said.

  • The #lifeinthefastlaneselfie: Couple takes cab-window selfie at 60km per hour

Those cabs in China can be so restraining. Maybe that’s why a man and a woman decided to take photos of themselves while perched outside the window of taxi going 60 km/h. According to the GlobalTimes.cn, (click here for photos) the driver of the cab told reporters the two propped themselves up on the backseat passenger window for a photo op. Didn’t their parents tell them to always wear their seatbelts?
