BRADFORD, Ont. — A Bradford mother has been charged with child abandonment after passersby found her shivering tot in a baby stroller next to a passed out drunk woman on the street, police say.

According to South Simcoe police, a concerned citizen called authorities shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday to report a woman with a baby stroller had fallen down drunk on the street.

Officers found the 30-year-old woman lying on the street and arrested her for public intoxication.

Police said a boy around two years old was wet and shivering, but uninjured, and was taken to police headquarters.

According to police, the woman and the child's 29-year-old mother had met earlier in the day and the mother left to buy cigarettes but did not return.

"She wasn't a babysitter. We're looking into the relationship between the two women," said Const. Richard Williamson.

The child is now in the care of the Simcoe County Children's Aid Society.
