The UK is facing a sperm shortage.

The BBC reports that because donations to sperm banks has declined, some clinics may be settling for lower quality donors.

A report cited by the BBC shows that clinics 1/4 of donated sperm comes from abroad, compared to one in 10 in 2005, before anonymity was removed from donors.

Most of the imported sperm comes from the U.S. or Denmark.

The supply shortage could lead to risky practices for fertilization such as DIY insemination or seeking treatment from countries with fewer regulations, the BBC reports.

The use of lower-quality sperm could also mean more procedures for women seeking insemination.
