A man from a religious sect known as the Pastafarians has been struggling to renew his driver’s licence in Surrey, B.C.

In the photo on his application, Obi Canuel is wearing a colander on his head.

Canuel, who is an ordained minister in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, said preventing him from wearing the kitchen accessory is a violation of his religious freedom.

He’s also now posted a video on YouTube to try to encourage other Canadians to stand up for religious freedom.

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), which administers the driver’s licence system, said they are aiming to maintain a balance between the reputation of the system and individual religious freedom.

Four other countries, including the United States, have allowed Pastafarians to wear the pasta strainers in their driver’s licence photographs.
