An Iranian woman that was sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery is now on the receiving end of another punishment: 99 lashes because a British newspaper published a photo of an unveiled woman that was incorrectly identified as her.
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was convicted in 2006 for having an "illicit relationship" with two men following the death of her husband a year before. She was later convicted of adultery and sentenced to be stoned to death. That sentence was lifted in July though she still could be hanged.
Ashtiani's case sparked an international outcry and caught the attention of the Vatican, which is trying to get the Iranian government to spare her life.
British paper The Times of London has issued an apology regarding the photo.
