A 10-year-old girl has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a three-month-old girl in Portland, Maine.
Police did not identify the girl, who was charged in the death of baby Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway on July 8.
"She's the youngest child to be charged with manslaughter that I am aware of over the past 25 years," Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, told the Portland Press Herald.
Nicole Greenaway, Brooklyn's mother, told the paper she left her baby with babysitter— not the the little girl — for an overnight stay.
That night, she got a call saying Brooklyn was in the hospital. By the time she got there, Brooklyn was dead and both the babysitter and the 10-year-old had left.
"I was there for three hours," she said. "They wouldn't let me see her. They didn't tell me at the time, but it was because of the condition that she was in. Her face was very beat up and bruised."

She said Maine State Police told her the baby died of suffocation and the bruises were related to that.
Traces of a type of medication prescribed to the 10-year-old were found in Brooklyn's system, Greenaway said.
At the babysitter's home, Brooklyn's crib was reportedly left in the 10-year-old girl's bedroom overnight. Greenaway insists she told her babysitter that Brooklyn should always have adult supervision.
The child is due in court Oct. 22.
