Sentenced to 18 years behind bars

A brutish man who injected heroin into his baby daughter's mouth was sentenced to 18 years in prison Friday, the BBC reports.

Roger Weir, 45, from Dorset, England, shot his ex-fiancee and mother of his child Gillian Blackmore, 27, with a flare gun and tried to kill her with a meat cleaver, court heard.

She escaped and managed to call police. Weir then locked himself in a room with the baby and threatened to kill her. He then shot heroin into their infant's mouth to get back at the child's mother for finding a new boyfriend.

"I can't live with the thought of someone else raising my daughter," he told police.

He was convicted of attempted murder and administering a noxious substance to a child.
