A two-month-old baby girl has had a second skull removed from her own head, the BBC reports.

Doctors in Afghanistan performed the operation last week in a Nangarhar hospital, located in the eastern part of the country. The doctors told the BBC the surgery was complicated because the second skull was linked to nerves and blood vessels.

Asree Gul was discharged to her family on Wednesday.

Gul has a twin sister, and doctors said the skull was likely caused by a third baby that didn't develop.

Gul's family asked doctors for help after the baby had trouble sleeping, and she was being stigmatized within their village.

Dr. Ahmad Obaid Mojadid performed the operation free of charge because it would have been too expensive for the family.

"We don't have very developed equipment," he told the BBC. "But we are very happy to have conducted the operation successfully."
