Detroit police are investigating after a man's body was found in his home, half of his leg chewed off by an animal.

"We think it's a dog, but we don't know," Sgt. Michael Woody told the Detroit Free Press Tuesday.

"His body was in such a state of decomposition, we can't tell if there was any foul play at this time."

Police said the 50-year-old man was found Monday afternoon after family members went to check on him after not hearing from him in a few days.

Detroit has a stray dog epidemic, with an estimated 50,000 of the animals wandering city streets. In August, CNN reported 90% of the strays are pit bulls or pit mixes. Detroit Animal Control has a total of five staff members to deal with the problem.
