A former employee of the Portuguese resort where three-year-old Madeleine McCann went missing from in May 2007 was a suspect in the case, but died four years ago in a tractor accident, a Portuguese newspaper reports.

The man had just been fired from the restaurant at the resort when Madeleine went missing, the Correio de Manha newspaper reports.

He had the means to abduct the British girl just days before her fourth birthday because he knew her parents' routine and that they dined late with friends.

Police sources told the newspaper the man probably didn't plan to kill Madeleine, but became scared after all the media attention and was forced to "silence" her.

Madeleine went missing during a family vacation to a Praia da Luz resort on Portugal's southern coast in May 2007.

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the McCann family, told British press the report is "pure speculation."
