While she hasn’t been front and centre since 2010, Sarah Palin comes out of the woodwork every so often to surprise and entertain us with her quips.
To mark her 50th birthday, we look back on some memorable Sarah Palin moments.
Making up words:
When Palin made up “refudiate” in a Twitter post, it was a just the beginning. Add on “squirmish” and “misunderestimate” and you have the makings of a living language.
Palin even compares herself to a modern day Shakespeare and maybe that isn’t a stretch. New Oxford American Dictionary did name “refudiate” its word of the year in 2010.
"Refudiate," "misunderestimate," "wee-wee'd up." English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!— Sarah Palin (@SarahPalinUSA) July 18, 2010
Somewhere between “sexy librarian” and “outdoorsy mom”, Palin has been known for her unique sense of style. Glasses, brunette bangs and a red power suit will be forever synonymous with the former Alaskan governor. At the same time, it was reported that she had a little fashion help from the the Republican Party. They reportedly spent $150,000 on clothes, make-up and haircuts for Palin and her family in 2008.
Tina Fey couldn’t help but step out of SNL retirement to play Palin. Teaming up with Amy Poehler who played Hillary Clinton, they took on the media’s critical coverage of the two female politicians.
Fey exaggerates Palin’s accent which makes the one liners really zing.
Who will ever forget, “I can see Russia from my house!”
Oh, and there’s always the uncanny resemblance, which was made even more apparent when Palin appeared on SNL alongside Fey.
She stands up for her kids
Despite a busy career, Palin has no problem playing mama bear when it comes to her kids.
When her teenage daughter, Bristol, became pregnant in 2008, it could have killed her campaign.
But Palin stood by Bristol, defending and praising her daughter for her strength in the media spotlight.
When Bill Maher took at shot at her son Trig, who has Down syndrome, Palin attacked right back tweeting:
Hey bully, on behalf of all kids whom you hatefully mock in order to make yourself feel big, I hope one flattens your lily white wimpy a#*.— Sarah Palin (@SarahPalinUSA) June 13, 2013
I'm in your neck of the woods this weekend, little Bill. Care to meet so I can tell you how I really feel? http://t.co/YlNbYwsQDz— Sarah Palin (@SarahPalinUSA) June 13, 2013
Like all proud moms she can’t help but share her children’s milestones with the world. She posted a photo of Trig, on his first day of school, on Facebook.
She is easy to mock, but can take it
Sometimes it is a turkey being butchered behind her, sometimes she can’t name which newspapers she reads and then there are days she can’t quite get her history straight. Palin has found herself mocked on many occasions but most of the time she just laughs it off.
According to SNL creator Lorne Michaels, Republicans can take a joke better than Democrats. Here’s hoping.
