MONTREAL- It was a love that lasted over six decades. For better or worse, through sickness and health, until death did they part.

Floreen Hale, 82, passed away in a Batavia, N.Y., hospital on February 7. When she died, she was holding her husband's hand. Ed Hale, who passed away 36 hours later at age 83, knew that Floreen wanted to go first.

They met at a party more than sixty years ago. He asked her parents for permission to marry her but was rebuffed. Hale refused to take no for an answer, and his persistence paid off. They were married on May 12, 1953.

By all accounts, it was a fairy-tale marriage. Many friends of the couple even took to calling him "Saint Edward."

About five years ago, Ed began to suffer from kidney failure and other diabetes-related complications. However, he continued to enjoy a good quality of life, and still went out with his wife almost every day.

Floreen Hale's health began to deteriorate in February. She was admitted to hospital in Batavia when her lungs filled with water. At the same time, her husband was admitted to hospital in Rochester, 56 kilometres away.

Ed Hale, dying and semi-conscious, demanded to be transferred to the same hospital as his wife. He arrived on February 6. Hospital workers arranged for the two to share a room, and put their beds beside each other so they could hold hands. They died just a day and a half apart, deeply in love until the very end.
