The bodies of thousands of aborted and miscarried babies were burned as clinical waste in U.K. hospitals - some in incinerators that were used to heat hospitals.

In an investigation, the Channel 4 show Dispatches found at least 15,500 fetal remains were incinerated by 27 hospitals in the past two years, the Telegraph reports.

At least two hospitals incinerated bodies of babies under 13 weeks gestation in their own "waste to energy" plants, the report said.

The parents were told the remains had been cremated.

Health Minister Dan Poulter ordered an immediate ban of the practice and told British media it was "totally unacceptable."

A spokeswoman for Ipswich Hospital, which allegedly brought in bodies from other hospitals to incinerate in its waste to energy plant, denied the report.

The hospital "does not incinerate fetal remains," the unnamed spokeswoman said, adding staff take "great care over fetal remains."
