The brother of the Duchess of Cornwall has died after slipping and falling outside a New York City nightclub.

Mark Shand, 62, fell Tuesday evening while outside the Diamond Horseshoe club to have a smoke. He sustained a serious head injury and was rushed to hospital.

A statement from Clarence House, which handles media for Prince Charles and Camilla, said Shand was a man of “extraordinary vitality, a tireless campaigner and conservationist.”

Camilla is “utterly devastated by this sudden and tragic loss.”

WENN.com reported Shand was attending an after-party following the annual Faberge Big Egg Hunt event by auction house Sotheby’s.

Shand worked as a travel writer and was chairman of Elephant Family, a wildlife foundation.
