It could happen. The Cavendish banana, the most popular kind in North America, is dying from a fungal disease called Tropical race 4 (TR4). The strain has already hit the banana crop in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. And the worry is that it will spread to Central and South America – where most of our bananas come from.
