A university in Madrid is being accused of storing donated bodies in a "chamber of horrors."

The newspaper El Mundo published photos showing bodies and body parts piled in a room in what the paper described as "a scene from a horror film." The paper claimed some bodies had been there for seven years.

Photos obtained by the newspaper showed the bodies after they had been used by the medical school.

One photo showed a room where bodies had been wrapped in white blankets and stacked on top of each other. Another room was filled with drying body parts.

Complutense University issued a statement admitting human remains had been allowed to accumulate, and partially blamed a staffing problem in recent months.

But officials said the photos gave "a distorted view of reality" and had been "surreptitiously obtained."

The school also said it had hired a funeral company to remove the remains. An internal investigation is underway.
