A 12-year-old Detroit boy who had been missing since June 14 was found alive in his father's basement Wednesday, police say.

After Charlie Bothuell V went missing, police appealed to the public for help and said they hadn't ruled out the possibility he'd been killed.

The Detroit Free Press said police found the boy crouched behind a large container. He was hidden by a barricade, which officers don't believe he built himself. There was food nearby, police said.

"In 37 years of policing, I will tell you, I've never seen anything quite like this," Chief James Craig told reporters. "But the outcome, I couldn't be happier."

Police are investigating whether the boy was abused.

The boy's father, Charlie Bothuell IV, told the media he didn't know his son was in his basement and for anyone to say he did "it's absurd and it's wrong."
