A 50-year-old elephant living in a refuge in Thailand was poisoned and had its tusks cut off, the group Elephantstay says.

The bull Plai Klow was killed Thursday night or Friday morning, the group said on its Facebook page.

"It is being treated with the utmost seriousness as a vicious heinous crime," the group said, noting an autopsy was planned and police, veterinarians and the army had been called in to help investigate.

The Associated Press said the elephant was used in royal processions and appeared in the 2004 movie Alexander, which starred Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie.
