New Yorkers awoke Tuesday to the strange sight of two white flags on the Brooklyn Bridge where the stars and stripes usually fly.

By mid-afternoon, NYPD officers had scaled the bridge's 273-foot towers to take down the white flags, which upon closer inspection looked to be bleached-out American flags, and replace them with new star-spangled banners.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility and it's unclear if it was a prank, a publicity stunt, a political act or a theft.

Whatever the case, New York Sen. Eric Adams wasn't amused.

He said if the white flags are "someone's idea of a joke," he's not laughing.

"We won't surrender our public safety to anyone," the senator tweeted. "Political and social expression, whatever its message may be, has a place in our society, but not at the expense of others' security."

The Brooklyn Bridge is considered a high-profile terrorist target and an NYPD patrol car is stationed nearby at all times.
