A giraffe being transported in an open container on a South African highway has died after hitting its head on an overpass.

“All we can ascertain at this stage is severe head trauma. We are continuing our investigation with the view to possibly lay criminal charges against those responsible,” Rick Allan of the Johannesburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told Eye Witness News.

Two giraffes – a cow and a bull – were being transported on Thursday when the accident occurred. The surviving giraffe, the bull that has now been named Lucky, was taken to the farm of a local veterinarian.

The owner of the giraffes told local media “we went through lots of other bridges” without any issues.

The horrific accident is reminiscent of a scene from the movie Hangover 3, in which Zach Galifianakis’ character, Alan, drives down a freeway with a giraffe in the back. That giraffe also meets an untimely end.
