MILFORD, Conn. - A 16-year-old girl died after being struck by the propeller of the boat she was tubing behind in the Long Island Sound on Wednesday, police said.
Another girl suffered a leg injury in the accident, authorities said.
The girls were with two others their age who were operating a privately owned recreational boat with an outboard engine in the waters off Greenwich Point Park, according to a statement by police in Greenwich, Conn.
The teens' names were not released pending notification of extended family. Further information was expected to be released later Thursday.
Two of the girls were being towed behind the boat on an inner tube when, for reasons still under investigation, they came in contact with the propeller, police said.
One girl died at the scene, police said. Her friend was taken to Stamford Hospital with a leg injury requiring extensive stitches. The teens were all students at Greenwich High School, the statement said.
Police said the incident was still under investigation by the Greenwich Police Department Marine Section and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
