A Minnesota family trapped in their car during Thursday's rainstorm has a mystery man to thank for their rescue.

Mark Huglen and his 16-year-old son Adam were driving through the city after attending an area hockey goalie camp when Thursday's one-in-100-year rain began to fall.

When the 52-year-old communications professor and his son arrived at the Higgins Underpass at Higgins Avenue and Main Street they could see the water was rising.

"It was heavy, torrential rain and our cars were bumper to bumper. As we approached the underpass, some cars were making it through, I didn't know the depth of the water so we decided to go through," he said.

Unfortunately, their four-door sedan wasn't so lucky.

Their car now stuck and the rain still coming down hard, they decided to wait it out.

However, mother nature had a different plan.
