Canada wants China and Russia to use their influence to convince Syrian President Bashar al-Assad not to deploy chemical weapons as the noose tightens around his regime.

"Canada is urging Russia and China to use what leverage they have to prevent the Syrian crisis from entering a dangerous new phase," said Rick Roth, spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird.

"Ultimately Assad and his forces will be held accountable."
